#265.  I can never get enough of Stew and The Negro Problem.  In the 90's, that statement was put to the test when he was living in LA and playing often.  There was one month I saw him perform 9 times, and by rough count I have seen Stew/TNP close to 120 times.

However, since he left LA and eventually ended up on Broadway, it's harder to see Stew but easier to keep count (only two times in 2010).  Wednesday night kicked off Stew's UCLA residency with a funny, insightful and revealing interview with former romantic/ongoing musical partner Heidi Rodewald, moderated by teacher/composer/KPFK DJ and longtime friend of Stew, Barry Smolin.  The night was another stunning night in the presence of genius, and I look forward to the next appearance, which isn't until March 2012 at Royce Hall.  So unless there is some previously unannounced LA performance this year, the show count for 2011 is only 1.

#262.  For a moment I considered wearing this to see Stew and Heidi perform at the Hammer tomorrow night, since Smile Records released The Naked Dutch Painter and Other Songs in 2002. However I was afraid it might conflict with my rule not to wear the shirt of the band I am seeing (OK, the rules don’t say anything about “associations with the band”, but it seemed like a close call).  After realizing The Beach Boys album Smile was finally being released the day before the Stew show, I decided to wear it on the day of its release.   Now I’m just counting down the minutes to the end of the day so I can go home and tear into my deluxe edition of The Beach Boys Smile.
